What Makes Home Restorative?

How thoughtful design can ease the demands of everyday life and create space for what matters most.

Picture yourself walking through your front door after a busy day. You hang your coat and bag, slip off your shoes, and tuck them neatly away. The day's mail goes into a seagrass basket, where it can wait until the weekend.

You look around. There's a vase of fresh flowers on the table, and the afternoon light is filtering softly through the windows.

You take a deep breath. Your shoulders relax.

For the first time all day, there's nothing demanding your immediate attention. You're ready to reconnect with your family, call your mother, or simply enjoy a moment to yourself.

This is how I believe home should make us feel.

Our homes should be places where we can recharge, replenish, and restore ourselves from the demands of everyday life. But creating that feeling doesn't happen by accident. It comes from understanding how our surroundings influence the way we live and feel.

At Sea Green Designs, we've spent more than 25 years creating interiors inspired by the natural world. Throughout that time, one belief has become central to our approach: a beautiful home should do more than reflect your personal style. It should support your well-being and make everyday life feel easier.

Here are three elements I consider when designing a home that supports well-being.

A Place for Everything

There's something quietly exhausting about walking into a room filled with things that need your attention. The unopened mail, shoes scattered across the floor, coats draped over chairs, or beach towels waiting to be put away.

Even when we're too busy to consciously notice the clutter, those unfinished tasks are still there, reminding us of everything we haven't gotten around to.

I believe thoughtful design can eliminate much of that unnecessary mental work.

When a home is designed around the rhythms of the people living in it, organization becomes intuitive. There's a natural place for the things we use every day, from keys and bags to outerwear and household paperwork.

Of course, life gets messy. A restorative home isn't about perfection. It's about creating an environment that makes daily life easier rather than adding to its demands.

When everything has a place, we have more freedom to be present in the moment, rather than constantly thinking about what needs to be done next.

Color Creates Atmosphere

Color is one of the most powerful tools we have for influencing the atmosphere of a room.

I love creating a palette that flows naturally from one space to another while allowing each room to have its own character and personality. The colors don't need to match, but they should feel connected, creating a sense of continuity as you move through the home.

Soft, earthy neutrals, muted greens, and gentle blues often bring a sense of calm. But I've also found that a room wrapped in a deep, rich color can feel incredibly comforting, almost like a warm embrace.

What's important is the balance of color, light, texture, and contrast, and how those elements make you feel.

A room with too much stark white might feel cold and impersonal, while the same white softened by natural wood, woven textures, and warm lighting can feel peaceful and inviting.

There isn't one perfect palette for a restorative home. The goal is to create spaces that feel harmonious and personal, offering the kind of atmosphere you want to return to at the end of the day.

Connecting to Nature at Home

Nature has always been my greatest source of inspiration.

When I'm designing a home, I begin by considering its surroundings. Whether it's a coastal retreat overlooking the water, a home nestled in the woods, or a residence in a more urban setting, I want the interiors to feel connected to the natural world beyond the walls.

Many of us choose second homes because of how a particular place makes us feel. We love the ocean, the trees, the landscape, or simply the change of pace. Why wouldn't we want to bring some of that same restorative feeling indoors?

Whether we're designing a coastal residence in the Hamptons or a retreat nestled in the countryside, we look to the surrounding landscape for inspiration. The colors, textures, and natural materials become part of the home's story, creating a connection between the indoors and outdoors that feels authentic to its setting.

Research into our relationship with nature suggests that spending time in natural environments can help reduce stress and restore our ability to focus. I find it fascinating that something as simple as our connection to the natural world can influence how we feel and think.

In my work, I look for ways to strengthen that connection through natural light, views of the outdoors, and materials that bring texture and authenticity into a room.

I love the relaxed character of textured linen and grasscloth paired with wide-plank oak floors in a light, natural finish. Fine woven wood shades, particularly those made from natural grasses, allow sunlight to filter softly through a room while adding another layer of organic texture.

And sometimes it's the simplest gestures that have the most meaning. A branch gathered from the garden, fresh flowers, or a pot of herbs on the kitchen windowsill can create a small but meaningful connection to the outdoors.

Nature can also become part of the sensory experience of home.

I love to meditate in the early morning, before anyone else is awake, listening to the sounds of birds and flowing water. It's a small ritual that helps me feel grounded and clear before the day begins.

A home that supports well-being should engage our senses in ways that help us feel more connected to ourselves and the world around us.

A Home That Gives Something Back

I often think about how much we ask of ourselves every day. We're constantly making decisions, juggling responsibilities, and responding to the needs of others.

Our homes shouldn't add to that noise.

They should offer something in return.

A sense of ease. A feeling of belonging. A place to reconnect with ourselves, the people we love, and the natural world.

That's what restorative design means to me.

And ultimately, that's what I believe makes a home truly beautiful.
